The MID server was observed as down, and logs indicated mutual authentication failures. Error messages included '400 Bad Request' with 'The SSL certificate error' and 'Mutual authentication failed!'. Digicert will fully remove Client Authentication EKU from newly issued public TLS certificates on March 1, 2027. This does not affect your existing TLS certificates with Client Authentication EKU issued before March 1, 2027. These certificates will remain trusted until they expire. This caused mutual authentication failures during mid server connection attempts. The expiring certificate still has the required EKU, but the replacement certificate lacks it, leading to authentication errors. Resolution<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } Steps to Resolve1. Verify the new certificate contains the required 'TLS Web Client Authentication' extended key usage (EKU) by running `openssl x509 -in new_cert.pem -noout -text | grep -A1 'Extended Key Usage'`.2. Ensure the new certificate with valid EKU is correctly uploaded to the mid server and ServiceNow instance.3. Re-issue the certificate if the initial version lacks the required EKU, as DigiCert no longer includes it by default in new public TLS certificates.4. Restart the MID server after applying the corrected certificate.5. Confirm the MID server status and connection stability post-restart.
