This can occur regardless of the record's current state (e.g. Awaiting Feedback, Ready, Work in Progress, Awaiting Approval) and without any corresponding activity in the record's history from a user or approval workflow. In observed cases, it results from a custom Business Rule on the task_sla table (or a similar customization) that is designed to run when an SLA record breaches a defined threshold (for example, 200% of the SLA duration). Some implementations of this kind of rule automatically force the related task's state field to Cancelled once the breach threshold is hit — intended as a way to stop further SLA escalation. The underlying rule is: the state change is not conditioned on the task's current state or type. As a result, the rule cancels any task that crosses the SLA-breach threshold, including tasks that are still actively being worked, rather than only tasks where cancellation is an appropriate outcome or limit to certain type of tasks. If such a rule is found, confirm whether it sets the task's state unconditionally on breach.Update the customization so it does not force a Cancelled state on tasks that are still in an active working state. Options include: Adding a condition that checks the task's current state (and/or sys_class_name/task type) before allowing the state change.Replacing the forced state change with a notification or escalation event instead, so the SLA breach is surfaced without altering the task's workflow state. Validate the change in a sub-production instance: drive a test record's SLA to the breach threshold and confirm the task no longer gets force-cancelled, then confirm the intended escalation/notification still fires as expected.
