Because a clone completely overwrites the target instance with data from the source instance, any update sets that exist only on the target instance will be lost unless they are preserved before the clone is performed. There are two recommended approaches: Option 1 – Export Update Sets Before the Clone This approach provides the most reliable backup of your update sets before the clone. Navigate to System Update Sets > Local Update Sets on the target instance.Filter for update sets where State = In Progress.For each update set: Change the state to Complete.Select Export to XML and save the file locally. After the clone is complete: Navigate to System Update Sets > Retrieved Update Sets.Import the exported XML files.Commit or back out the update sets as required. Note: Changing an update set to Complete solely for export purposes is safe. After the clone, you can create a new update set and continue development without issue. Option 2 – Use Clone Preservation for In-Progress Global Update Sets The clone process can preserve global update sets that are in progress and have been updated within the last 90 days. This option may be suitable if you want to retain active global development work during the clone. However, please be aware of the following limitations: Only global-scope update sets are preserved.Scoped application update sets are not preserved.Update sets older than 90 days are not preserved.Other update set-related records may still require a custom preservation strategy. Best Practice: Review, complete, and commit update sets whenever possible before a clone.
