The driver fetches the table schema from the ServiceNow instance and retrieves column metadata for the queried table. This schema metadata is cached in memory on the ODBC driver side. Subsequent query executions reuse the cached schema, skipping the schema discovery step entirely. The first execution duration includes schema fetch, query preparation, and actual data retrieval, while subsequent executions perform only the actual data retrieval. The schema cache is based on table structure, not on query content or filter values. Changing filter values or modifying the WHERE clause does not trigger a schema re-fetch, as long as the same tables are involved. The intermittent longer execution time is likely caused by SQL Server dropping the idle linked server connection. When this occurs, the next query requires a full reconnection to the ServiceNow instance, which includes re-establishing the session and re-fetching the schema. Each time the client is closed and reconnects, the cache is rebuilt, and schema calls are made to retrieve the tables and their corresponding columns. This process is required and cannot be avoided. It depends on the query being executed and the amount of data in the tables on the instance. For example, a query such as "SELECT TOP 2 number from incident" will generally execute quickly. However, if the query includes joins and complex conditions, and the tables contain thousands or millions of records, the execution time will increase proportionally with the amount of data being processed. Verify that the schema is being re-fetched during first execution & intermittent delays when the SQL Server drops an idle linked server connection by checking the server-side instance logs during the times when the longer execution time is observed for incoming requests to the following endpoints: GET <instance>/?SCHEMA — fetches the list of all tablesGET <instance>/<tableName>.do?SCHEMA — fetches column metadata for the queried table
