Traditional export processes handle all records sequentially within a single export set, causing performance bottlenecks, extended processing times, and increased system load. This negatively impacts scheduled exports, integrations, reporting workflows, and data migration operations. Parallel Export Architecture Parallel Export addresses this by splitting the workload into smaller chunks and processing them simultaneously. The architecture involves four key components: Component Role sys_export_set Table Central tracking table for export operations. In parallel export, multiple export set records are created (one per chunk) instead of a single record. Each record represents a portion of the total dataset and tracks progress, failures, and retries independently. Workers / Threads Execute export chunks in parallel. Each worker picks one sys_export_set record (chunk) and processes it independently. More workers = more chunks processed simultaneously. Nodes (Multi-node Architecture) In multi-node instances, ServiceNow distributes work across different application servers. Each node can process multiple chunks, improving scalability and overall performance. Schedulers / Background Workers System-level job handlers that trigger export jobs, manage execution lifecycle, assign chunks to available workers, handle queueing and retries. Act as "traffic controllers" deciding which worker runs which chunk. Processing Flow Example Example: Exporting 100,000 incident records with 10 workers: Data is divided into 10 chunks of 10,000 records each. Each chunk gets a separate sys_export_set record. All 10 workers process their assigned chunks simultaneously. Results from each chunk are consolidated into a single output file.Result: 5–10 minutes total processing time (vs. 40–60 minutes sequential) Resolution When to Use Parallel Export Enable Parallel Export for the following scenarios: Datasets contain 50,000+ recordsExport operations are slow or resource-heavyInstance uses a multi-node architectureScheduled exports run during business hoursIntegrations depend on timely data export completionData migration operations require large-scale exports Key Benefits Significantly faster export processing (5–10 minutes vs. 40–60 minutes for 1M records)Reduced system load by distributing work across workers and nodesBetter scalability in multi-node environmentsImproved performance for scheduled exports, integrations, and data migrationTransparent operation—end users see a single consolidated export resultIndependent failure handling per chunk with retry capabilities System Property Configuration Property: glide.scheduled_export.min_rows_for_parallel_export Default value: 50,000Description: Threshold at which parallel export is automatically triggeredNote: If unavailable in a PDI, create the property manually with desired threshold value Considerations Parallel Export overhead may not benefit single-node instances with small datasetsMost effective in multi-node production environmentsEnsure adequate worker threads and background job capacityMonitor scheduled_export_worker logs for job status and failures Related Links<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } ServiceNow Export Sets Documentation: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/latest/page/administer/export-set.htmlsys_export_set Table Reference: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/latest/page/administer/export-set.htmlScheduled Exports: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/latest/page/administer/scheduled-exports.htmlSystem Properties Reference: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/latest/page/administer/system-properties.htmlPerformance Best Practices: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/latest/page/administer/performance-best-practices.html
