Microsoft Defender TVM integration creates empty Unmatched CI records with only the Operating System field populatedIssue <!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } After configuring the Microsoft Defender Threat and Vulnerability Management (TVM) integration for Vulnerability Response, a large volume of records is created in the Unmatched Configuration Item (CI) table (sn_sec_cmn_unmatched_ci) with no identifier data. The records contain no Name, Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), IP Address, MAC Address, or NetBIOS value — only the Operating System field is populated, typically with the value "Other". The Defender /api/machines endpoint returns these devices with an empty computerDnsName and an empty networkInterfaces array, so the integration receives records that contain no FQDN, IP address, or MAC address. Because the CI lookup rules have no identifier values to match on, the Identification and Reconciliation Engine (IRE) creates Unmatched CI records containing only the Operating System value. The integration is processing the data as designed — the source records simply carry no identifier data. The OOB machine_filter value, onboardingStatus in ('Onboarded'), is intended to exclude unmanaged devices. However, some Defender tenants return Device Discovery records with onboardingStatus = 'Onboarded', which allows them to pass the filter and be ingested. Additionally, if the filter is restricted using an osPlatform clause that excludes client operating systems (for example, Windows 10/11 or macOS), the Vulnerabilities integration continues to fetch vulnerability data for all machines while the Machines integration no longer imports those clients as host records. This mismatch produces the could not find the record(s) with the Machine Id(s) transform errors.
