Reference variable inside a Multi-Row Variable Set (MRVS) returns empty when dot-walked in a SubflowIssue <!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } A Flow passes a row from a Multi-Row Variable Set (MRVS) into a Subflow as an input. The MRVS row contains a reference-type variable. Inside the Subflow:- The top-level input shows as a valid record when inspected via the data pill picker.- Actions further downstream that attempt to dot-walk into the reference variable's fields return empty at runtime.- Testing the Subflow standalone in Flow Designer (with a manually supplied test record) works correctly; the issue only reproduces when the Subflow is actually invoked by the parent Flow with a real MRVS row. When a reference variable is included as a field inside an MRVS row, only the sys_id string of the referenced record is stored in that row's JSON object, the full record is not serialized along with it. This produces a dot-walking limitation: a reference variable cannot be dot-walked directly out of an MRVS data pill array. When that MRVS row/object is passed as input to a Subflow, only the sys_id string crosses the input boundary. The Flow Engine on the receiving side has no mechanism to deserialize that string back into the full referenced record, so any attempt to dot-walk into its fields from the data pill resolves to empty. This is expected, by-design behavior of how Workflow Studio serializes MRVS reference variables, not a defect in a specific Flow or Subflow. Resolution<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } Because the Subflow only receives the sys_id string (not the deserialized record), explicitly re-resolve the record inside the Subflow before use: In the Subflow, add a Look Up Record action.Configure the Look Up Record action to query the table the reference variable points to, using the sys_id from the input data pill as the lookup condition. In all subsequent actions that need fields from the referenced record, reference the output of the Look Up Record action instead of dot-walking directly from the original MRVS/Item data pill.Re-test by running the parent Flow end-to-end (not the Subflow standalone) to confirm the looked-up record's fields now resolve correctly. Note: This is a required design pattern any time a reference variable inside an MRVS needs to be consumed downstream (e.g., in a called Subflow), not a one-off fix. Any Flow/Subflow combination using an MRVS with reference variables should include a Look Up Record step to re-hydrate the record before dot-walking its fields.
