Atlassian Confluence Cloud for External Content Connector - During the setup, can we use "API key with scopes"?Issue <!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } For the External Content Connector for Confluence Cloud setup, we are following this doc: Configure Atlassian Confluence Cloud for external content indexing In Step #2 d, it recommends to use "API keys without scopes". This seems to allow more user access than needed. Is there a way we can use "API key with scopes" ? The reason for this is that this information is not reliably available through the standard Confluence Content APIs, particularly when users have configured private profile settings. Access is primarily effective for so-called managed users, where the organization has visibility into the users' identity information. To achieve this, the connector uses Atlassian Organization APIs (/users/{account_id}/manage/profile) to resolve the corresponding user information. The Admin API Key is not used to access Confluence content itself (pages, spaces, or attachments). Access to content is handled separately through the application used for crawling and remains fully governed by the Confluence permissions assigned to that application. The API Key is used exclusively for email address resolution. Without this key, users whose email addresses are not publicly visible cannot be mapped reliably. Regarding the scope, the current requirement for an API Key without configurable scopes is a consequence of Atlassian's security and API model. The Organization APIs required for this functionality do not currently support granular permission restrictions through selectable scopes. Instead, access is governed by the permissions of the Organization Admin who creates the API Key. It must Crawl all content and metadata, access user and group data for permission mapping. Atlassian's fine‑grained API keys do not yet fully support the required endpoints. No supported alternative exists at this time. Restricted‑scope API keys are not compatible with the connector, and web‑crawler approaches are discouraged and cannot maintain Confluence permissions. At the same time, to improve this scope concern, our product management team has created this PRB2064056 to address them in a future release.
