CMDB Scripted REST API Performance Degrades When Using sysparm_display_value=true — N+1 SQL Dot-Walk PatternIssue <!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } Using sysparm_display_value=true on REST API calls against CMDB CI tables (e.g., cmdb_ci_network_adapter) triggers an N+1 SQL pattern where the platform issues hundreds of additional database queries per API call — one for each reference field on each returned CI record. At scale, this compounds into thousands of queries per request, causing progressive API slowdown and eventual platform degradation. Example Request: GET /api/now/table/cmdb_ci_network_adapter ?sysparm_fields=mac_address,ip_address,cmdb_ci &sysparm_query=u_source_flagISNOTEMPTY ^mac_addressISNOTEMPTY ^mac_address!=FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF ^mac_address!=00:00:00:00:00:00 ^ip_addressISNOTEMPTY ^cmdb_ci.location.name=<datacenter_name> &sysparm_display_value=true &sysparm_limit=1000 &sysparm_offset=0 Symptoms<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } API calls that were previously completing in milliseconds now taking several seconds or timing out.Performance degradation that worsens with the number of records returned per call.High database query load reported in system diagnostics even for simple read operations.Multiple node restarts or elevated CPU/memory pressure on the application nodes coinciding with API activity. How sysparm_display_value works: Normally, a REST API response for a reference field returns its sys_id (the raw database key). When sysparm_display_value=true is set, ServiceNow is instructed to resolve and return the human-readable display value for every reference field in the response — for example, instead of returning a user's sys_id, it returns their full name. To do this, the platform must dot-walk into the referenced table: it issues a separate SQL SELECT query for each reference field on each record returned. This is the N+1 pattern — 1 base query + N additional queries per record per reference field. Figure 1 — The N+1 query multiplication effect. Each reference field on each record triggers a separate SQL dot-walk query when sysparm_display_value=true is set. Query count formula Total queries = 1 (base) + (records_returned × reference_fields_per_record) Example (production scenario): records_returned = 50 reference_fields = ~20 (cmdb_ci_network_adapter) dot-walk queries = 50 × 20 = 1,000 total SQL queries = 1 + 1,000 = 1,001+ At higher limits (sysparm_limit=100): dot-walk queries = 100 × 20 = 2,000 total SQL queries = 1 + 2,000 = 2,001+ ← compounds with record count Resolution<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } 1. Remove sysparm_display_value=true (primary fix) If the integration does not strictly require human-readable display values in the API response, remove the parameter entirely. The default behavior (sysparm_display_value=false) returns raw sys_id values for reference fields — no dot-walking occurs, and query count drops to 1 per API call. 2. Restrict fields with sysparm_fields (if display values are required) If the integration genuinely requires display values for a subset of fields (for example, a human-readable CI name or assignment group), use sysparm_fields to limit the API response to only those fields. This reduces the number of reference fields the platform must dot-walk from ~20 to the exact set needed.
