This can cause inbound emails to be processed late or not at all, and may trigger automated monitoring alerts. height: ; } } There are two distinct causes that can produce this symptom: Cause 1 — Missing Mail.ReadWrite permission: When the Azure app registration used for Microsoft Graph inbound email is configured with only Mail.Read permission, the ServiceNow platform can retrieve messages from the mailbox but cannot mark them as read after processing. Because the messages remain unread on the Exchange server, the Email Reader re-reads the same messages on every subsequent run, causing the job to loop continuously and run far longer than expected. Cause 2 — Duplicate sys_graph_email entries: When the Email Reader processes a large volume of messages in a single run, the system may attempt to insert records into the sys_graph_email table that already exist (from a prior incomplete run). Each duplicate insert attempt fails with a unique constraint violation and must be retried, significantly extending the duration of the job. Both causes are often present together: the missing Mail.ReadWrite permission causes messages to accumulate unread, which in turn produces the large volumes that trigger duplicate entry errors. Resolution<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } Part 1 — Add Mail.ReadWrite Permission to the Azure app registration Sign in to the Azure portal and navigate to Azure Active Directory > App registrations.Open the app registration used for the ServiceNow inbound email account.Select API permissions in the left navigation panel.Confirm whether Mail.ReadWrite is listed. If it is absent, select Add a permission, select Microsoft Graph, then select Application permissions.Search for and selectMail.ReadWrite, then select Add permissions.Select Grant admin consent for your organization and confirm. Both Mail.Read and Mail.ReadWrite must show a green checkmark status before proceeding. Note: Admin consent must be granted by an Azure Active Directory administrator. If you do not have the required permissions, contact your Azure administrator to complete this step.Return to your ServiceNow instance and navigate to System Mailboxes > Inbound > Email Accounts (https://<instance-name>/nav_to.do?uri=sys_email_account_list.do).Open the affected inbound email account record.Scroll to the OAuth profile field and select the linked OAuth profile to open it.Delete the existing access token: On the OAuth profile record, locate the Token related list or the Access token field.Delete or clear the existing token. Select Get OAuth Token (or equivalent button on your OAuth profile record) to re-authorize the connection. Complete the authorization flow when prompted.Select Test connection on the email account record to confirm the connection is working. Part 2 — Reset the Email Reader job if it is currently stuck Navigate to System Scheduler > Scheduled Jobs (https://<instance-name>/nav_to.do?uri=sys_trigger_list.do) and search for Email Reader. If the Email Reader job shows a state of Running and has been running for more than 2 hours, open the record.Set the State field to Error, save the record, then reopen it and set the State back to Ready, and save again. This resets the job without restarting the instance. Note: Resetting the job stops the current stuck run and allows the next scheduled execution to begin cleanly. It does not delete any email records.Monitor the Email Reader job over the next several runs to confirm it completes within a normal duration. Navigate to System Mailboxes > All > Received to verify inbound emails are being processed correctly.
