It stores a reference to the source (original) knowledge article, typically in the base language (often English). It is populated only on translated articles, not on the original article. It ensures all translated articles are logically grouped as language variants of the same knowledge content.Since parent is always set to v1.0 via article_id, if the v1.0 record has been deleted from the instance, the reference field has nothing to point to and renders empty. This also breaks the parent-child hierarchy, causing translated articles to not appear under the source article and the "translated from" field became empty. Example: An article A is originally created in English with version v1.0.Later, the article is updated to version v2.0.The base version (v1.0) is missing from the instance (for example, it was deleted or never migrated).Only the updated version (v2.0) of article A exists in the system.A user attempts to translate version v2.0 of the article into another language (e.g., French).The translated article is created successfully.However, the "Translated From" field on the translated article is empty.This happens because the system cannot find the base version (v1.0) to establish the translation reference.
