If the instance was cloned after the application was created but before a version was published, the clone operation overwrites the application on the target instance. If the instance backup retention period — typically two weeks — has expired, recovery of the application from the source instance is not possible. Step 1: Determine the original publication method Identify whether the application was published using one of the following methods: App Repo — Published directly to the ServiceNow App RepoUpdate Sets — Captured in a local or retrieved update setSource Control — Committed to a source control repository such as GitHub or GitLab Step 2: Attempt recovery based on the publication method If published via Update Sets: Go to All > System Update Sets > Retrieved Update Sets or Local Update Sets.Search for an update set containing the application.If an update set is found, commit or apply it to restore the application. If published via Source Control: Go to the source control repository where the application was committed — for example, GitHub or GitLab.Pull the application from the repository to restore it on the instance. If published via App Repo only: Recovery is not possible if no version was published to the App Repo before the application was overwritten. The scope identifier may remain listed under Scopes in the App Repo, but without a published version, the application cannot be retrieved. General guidelines for protecting scoped applications To prevent data loss in future development cycles, follow these guidelines: Publish at least one version of a scoped application to the App Repo, Source Control, or an update set before performing a clone operation.Back up instance data before cloning, and verify the backup is accessible within the retention period.If an application is overwritten during a clone, open a support case promptly. Backup retention is typically two weeks — acting within this period increases the chance of recovery.Use Source Control integration to maintain version history for scoped applications independently of the instance.
