Create a KB article using a custom template (on a custom table extended from kb_knowledge). Add the article to a topic in Employee Center. Navigate to the topic in Employee Center and view the article tile. Observe that the article description/body is blank in the tile. Expected Result:

The article description should be displayed in the Employee Center article tile, consistent with OOB template articles.

Actual Result:

The article tile shows no description. The article body area is empty.

The Employee Center article tile widget (OOB) reads the article body from the standard text field on the kb_knowledge table. Custom KB templates on extended tables often store the article description in a custom field (e.g., u_kb_description ) rather than the OOB text field. Since the EC widget does not read from the custom field, the description is not displayed.

Contributing Factors:

The custom template table is extended from kb_knowledge but uses a custom field for article content instead of the inherited text field. The OOB text field on the parent kb_knowledge record remains empty for articles created with the custom template. This is a customization-related issue — the OOB Employee Center widget behaves as designed. Create a Business Rule on the custom template table with the following configuration: When: Before Insert and Before Update Condition: The custom description field is not empty Script: Copy the value from the custom description field into the standard text field: current.text = current.u_kb_description; (adjust the field name to match your custom field) Save and test by creating or updating an article using the custom template. Navigate to Employee Center and verify the article tile now displays the description. Verification:

Open the Employee Center topic page and confirm the article tile shows the description for articles created with the custom template.

Notes:

For existing articles that were created before the Business Rule was added, run a background script or scheduled job to backfill the text field from the custom description field. This approach requires no modifications to the OOB Employee Center widget. If the custom template uses multiple custom fields for different content sections, determine which field(s) should map to the text field for the tile preview.
