Each row in this table represents one variable answer, linked back to the parent record using the document_id field, which holds the sys_id of the change request (or whichever task record it belongs to).Change requests are not catalog items(could be record producers exluding Standard changes, in general). They don't go through the catalog ordering flow, so ServiceNow uses question_answer as the bridge to persist variable data against task-based records. For Request Items the variables in the Variable editor will be fetched from sc_item_option_mtom & sc_item_option table. When a Variable Editor appears on an RITM (Requested Item), it is pulling data through the standard Service Catalog variable framework, which uses two tables together. sc_item_option — Variable Definitions This table stores the definitions of each variable for a catalog item. Think of it as the schema. sc_item_option_mtom — RITM ↔ Variable Relationship This is the many-to-many mapping table that links a specific RITM instance to its variable definitions. It stores which variables apply to a given RITM and holds the actual values entered by the user. When a user opens an RITM, the Variable Editor queries sc_item_option_mtom filtered by request_item = <RITM sys_id> to find which variable rows apply, then joins with sc_item_option to get the labels, types, and display configuration.
