Project Workspace - WBS code of certain Project Tasks is being duplicatedIssue <!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } After creating a new task in the Planning Console, the task is assigned a WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) number that duplicates an existing task's WBS. For example, inserting a task below a task numbered 1.15 results in the new task receiving WBS 1.16, but another task with WBS 1.16 already exists. Subsequent "Add Task Above" or "Add Task Below" operations continue to produce duplicate WBS numbers, causing ordering conflicts in the project plan. When one or more project tasks have the Time Constraint set to "Start on specific date" while also having predecessor or successor dependencies defined, the system encounters a conflict it cannot resolve. "Start on specific date" is the strongest scheduling constraint in the PPM engine and overrides all dependency-based scheduling. Because the system cannot honor both the fixed date constraint and the dependency simultaneously, the unresolved scheduling conflict interferes with the internal WBS reordering logic that runs during task insertion, resulting in duplicate WBS numbers being assigned. This behavior can occur on any release and is not version-specific. It is triggered by the configuration pattern rather than a platform defect. Resolution<!-- /*NS Branding Styles*/ --> .ns-kb-css-body-editor-container { p { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } span { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, #000000); } h2 { font-size: 24pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h3 { font-size: 18pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } h4 { font-size: 14pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--text-primary, black); } a { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718F); } a:hover { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #024F69); } a:target { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #032D42); } a:visited { font-size: 12pt; color: var(--now-color--link-primary, #00718f); } ul { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } li { font-size: 12pt; font-family: Lato; } img { display: ; max-width: ; width: ; height: ; } } Step 1: Remove Invalid Duplicate Tasks Delete any duplicate or test tasks that were created during the failed "Add Task" attempts. These may include tasks with names such as "test task below," "Test," or any other unintended entries that carry duplicate WBS numbers. These tasks were created while the scheduling conflict was active and are not valid. Step 2: Correct Time Constraints on Affected Tasks Identify all tasks that have the Time Constraint set to "Start on specific date" and also have dependency relationships (predecessors or successors). Change the Time Constraint on each of these tasks from "Start on specific date" to "Start no earlier than." This constraint preserves the intended target start date while allowing the scheduling engine to also respect dependency relationships, eliminating the conflict. Step 3: Recalculate the Project Schedule Navigate to Project Diagnostics → Recalculate to force the system to resequence WBS numbers and recalculate the project schedule. Verify that all WBS numbers are now unique and correctly ordered. Recommendation Avoid using "Start on specific date" on any task that has dependency relationships. This constraint is intended for tasks that must begin on an exact date regardless of any other scheduling factors. When a task also has predecessors or successors, use "Start no earlier than" instead. This constraint honors both the target date and the dependency chain, preventing scheduling conflicts that lead to WBS duplication and other unexpected behaviors.
