The watermark is associated to a target record from where the email was triggered.Even though you modify the subject by removing the Re: prefix, this will still be considered as a reply if there is a valid Watermark present in the email body. Scenario 2 - In-reply-to header In this scenario the instance doesn't necessarily require watermark or the record number in the subject to classify the email as a reply. For example, A user sends an email to the instance, which creates a target record in the instance and it will be associated to the inbound email received. Any user replying to the original email will have the In-reply-to header, where it contains the message-id of the original email. As the original email contains a valid target record, this reply email is considered as a reply to the same record.Until the email chain breaks from the user's end (where they remove the instance email address from a reply in the chain and add it back later), all subsequent replies on the same email chain will be classified as replies to the original email. In a scenario when relying solely on the In-reply-to header, if users reply in quick succession, there is a possibility where one of the email will be classified as new. Below article explains this scenario in detail. KB3151434 - Reply Email Unexpectedly classified as New Instead of reply when relying on In-Reply-to header Scenario 3 - Record number in the subject along with Re: prefix Any inbound email with an Re: prefix and a valid record number in the subject will be considered as a reply email to the mentioned record. This type of classification is important if user accidentally removes the watermark from the email body.If there is no Re: prefix, and the email contains the record number, this email will be classified as new.
