This is because whether an application is installed via Appliance disk image or not is considered a minor attribute, not relevant to the major Class. Class is one dimension, and using that value for multiple dimensions, such as hardware form factor, virtual or not, commercial operating system or vendor-specific/embedded, main usage/application, is never going to be 100% correct. For historical reasons, CMDB and Discovery decided on Class based on the OS in general for 'computers', and the function for dedicated/embedded devices, and this consideration is unlikely to change. Most applicances are a pre-built OS image, running on generic server hardware. But the OS image is configured to act as if it were a standalone rack unit such as a traditional firewall, load balancer, storage server etc. and it's that function that defines which Class it goes in, together with the devices that are traditional physical network gear or hardware.Regarding the best practices on where these classes can be created as per CSDM, a CSDM specialist services group or Partner should be consulted if this kind of major customization needs to be planned a implemented. For Server Appliance, the CI would stored on the corresponding server class. For example, if the device is a Linux server appliance, it would be stored in the Linux Server class.For Storage Appliances, the Storage Server [cmdb_ci_storage_server] class can be used.For Backup Appliance, the Backup Server [cmdb_ci_backup_server] class can be used.For Security Appliances, the Security Device [cmdb_ci_security] class can be used.For Cryptographic Appliance, there is no OOTB class available.For vCenter appliance, it can be stored in the corresponding server class. If it is a Linux server appliance, it would be stored in the Linux Server class.
