In Quebec and later releases, references are retained, so users can click the field to open the referenced record. Navigate to the relevant archive rule. e.g. System Archiving > Archive Rules2. Open the archive rule record.3. Select the Retain references check box. Once selected, this setting cannot be disabled and the check box becomes read-only.4. Save the record.5. Select the Recalculate Estimate related link at the bottom of the archive rule record to get an estimate of how many records will be targeted. This may take a few attempts before the data is marked for reprocessing and the count appears in the Record Estimate field. Verify accuracy before publishing6. Once the estimate is confirmed, select Run Archive to trigger the migration process. This updates the archive table structure and converts existing string fields to reference fields populated with sys_id values for previously archived records. Verify accuracy before publishing For any records already archived before this feature was enabled, two background jobs trigger automatically to update those records and make reference retention work. - The RefCopy job triggers first and changes the displayed text back to sys_ids.
