This is normal and desirable — it maintains efficient text index searching by reducing the size of the text index tables. However, when a term becomes a stop word, searches for that term no longer return the expected records.

Text indexes are built against the highest-level parent table, which is why task appears in the text indexes instead of incident or change_request.

To view the auto threshold for a table:

Navigate to System Definition > Text Indexes. Open the text index entry for the table. Locate the Auto threshold field as shown in the following image. The Auto threshold value defines the number of matching records that triggers stop word creation. For example, a value of 50,000 means that when a search term matches more than 50,000 records in that table or any of its child tables, the system creates a stop word for that term in the ts_index_stop table.

> Warning: Do not increase the Auto threshold value to a larger number. Doing so increases the size of the text index tables — every term is indexed up to that amount — which significantly degrades text index performance over time.

Confirm that the term exists in the ts_index_stop table. Note that a stemmed form of the search term may be the stop word rather than the term itself. For example, if swimming is the search term, the stop word may be swam or swim .

Step 2 — Check the Stop mode field

Once the record is located in the ts_index_stop table, check the Stop mode drop-down list field. It is set to one of the following two values:

Index but do Not Query — The system continues to insert the term into the text index tables when it appears in a record. Searches do not return results for the term, but indexing continues. To restore search results, change Stop mode to Not a Stop Word . This takes effect immediately. Neither Index nor Query — The system stops inserting the term into the text index tables from the point the stop word switches to this mode. Even after changing Stop mode to Not a Stop Word , newer records created or updated after the mode switched to Neither Index nor Query are absent from the text index tables. A full index rebuild is required to restore complete search results. Step 3 — Rebuild the index (if required)

If the Stop mode was set to Neither Index nor Query, a full index rebuild is required after changing the mode to Not a Stop Word .

> Warning: Rebuilding the index for a table wipes out existing indexes. Depending on system load and the number of records in the target table, the rebuild may take a considerable amount of time. Plan the rebuild to run over a weekend or another period of low usage. Test the rebuild on a non-production instance first to get a general estimate of timing — note that timing on production may differ.

Once the index rebuild is complete, searches for the term return all expected records.
